The representative is trying to legislate to protect Baja California residents from heat stroke

Mexicali. – Representative Michel Sánchez Allende proposed to the State Congress an initiative aimed at establishing by law that the State Secretariat of Health and municipalities consider programs for the prevention and treatment of heat stroke, given the high temperatures recorded in Mexicali.

In her reform initiative with a draft decree, the legislature wants to change various sections of the health law for the state of Baja California, including municipalities.

The aim is to adopt a regional approach to legislate and address the problem that causes several victims to lose their lives every year.

The reform also provides for the creation, updating and publication of an annual register of people who have died from heat stroke.

“The high temperature season is associated with an increase in cases and deaths due to exhaustion and heat stroke as well as acute diarrheal diseases, among other damages such as dehydration and sunburn,” said Sanchez Allende when presenting the IMSS data initiative.

He added that in Baja California, especially in Mexicali, there have been at least 42 deaths due to heat stroke this year (as of August 30, 2023), according to data from the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo).

While according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the maximum temperature in Mexicali was 52 degrees Celsius. In general, however, summer is extremely hot, with daytime temperatures exceeding 41 degrees Celsius practically every day of the season, the first deputy explained.

And although he emphasized that the current government has promoted various measures to prevent and combat heat stroke among the population through a drinking point, he noted that this is done without a specific regulatory framework.
