Mansfield, Texas. The city’s Independent School District announced a plan to crack down on disturbances caused by personal electronic devices, including cell phones, during classes, including confiscations and fines.
Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, Mansfield ISD will implement a series of new guidelines that will attempt to limit the use of cell phones, smartwatches and hearing aids during school hours.
“We believe the new guidelines will limit the distractions and interruptions in the learning process that can often be caused by cell phone use,” said Courtney Lackey Wilson, Mansfield ISD board chair.
He adds, “We want to empower our employees by outlining clear consequences for violations.”
What would a ban on the use of personal electronic devices look like in Mansfield ISD?
Until sixth grade, students must keep their personal electronic devices turned off and away during school hours.
Students in grades 7th through 12th should keep their devices turned off and put away during class periods only.
Officials have warned that: Principals of schools will have the discretion to allow cell phone use during recess and lunch.
Youth equipment found to be in violation of this rule will be confiscated and turned over to school administrative offices. The parent/guardian/student may retrieve it by paying a $15 fine.
