‘The situation in India’s Covid-19’: WHO chief

The situation in Covid-19 in India is still very worrying, with several states still seeing worrying numbers of cases, hospitalizations and deaths, WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday, warning that the second year of the pandemic ‘many will be more lethal than the first year. for the world.

Ghebreyesus added that the WHO is responding to the Covid-19 boom in India and has sent thousands of oxygen concentrators, tents for mobile field hospitals, masks and other medical supplies.

“India is still very concerned, while several states are still seeing a worrying number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths,” he said at the daily media conference.

“And we thank all the stakeholders who support India,” the WHO Director-General said.

India is in the midst of a deadly wave of the coronavirus pandemic, with 3,43,144 people testing positive for the virus on Friday, taking the country’s case flow to 2,40,46,809. The death toll stands at 2.62 317.

India’s Covid 19 score surpassed the 10 million mark on 19 December and doubled in less than six months, surpassing the grim milestone of 20 million cases on 4 May.

Ghebreyesus pointed out that the emergency is not limited to India.

“Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Egypt are just a few countries dealing with nails in cases and hospitalizations,” he said, adding that some countries in the Americas still have a large number of cases and as a region. the Americas accounted for 40 percent of all deaths in Covid-19 last week.

There are also nails in some countries in Africa. “These countries are in an enhanced response mode and the WHO will continue to provide support in all possible ways,” he said.

Ghebreyesus noted that Covid-19 has already cost more than 3.3 million lives around the world, saying: “We are on track for the second year of this pandemic to be more lethal than the first.”

He lamented that the provision of vaccines is a major challenge and that saving lives and livelihoods with a combination of public health measures and vaccination – not one or the other – is the only way out of the pandemic.
