Tesla is an American company that specializes in solar energy. It produces electric cars, batteries and solar panels. In barely 20 years, it managed to position itself in the global market, and now it will expand its operations in the country with a plant in Monterrey, in Nuevo Leon.
The company led by Elon Musk has six factories in the world, four of them in the United States: the first is in Freemount, California, and produces all car models; the other in Nevada, intended for the manufacture of motors and batteries; one that makes solar panels in New York; and the Gigafactory in Texas, at Tesla’s global headquarters.
The automaker is also present in Asia (in Shanghai, where it had its first installation outside its country of origin) and Europe (in Brandenburg, Germany, where the Model Y is assembled). Now Mexico will be added to this list, because of its proximity.
Tesla is notable for having more than 100,000 employees who design, build, sell and service all products internally.
20 years of clean energy
Tesla was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning with the goal of putting electric vehicles ahead of fossil fuels. They joined investors Elon Musk, Ian Wright and JB Straube as co-founders.
Later, in 2008, Musk took on the role of CEO of the company, after he decided that votes were necessary to shake up the founders’ fortunes.
The brand’s first car came in 2003, under the name Tesla Roadster. But the market launch happened three years later. Already in 2012 they launched the Model S (which was the first all-electric premium sedan in history).
As sales of solar cars increased, new factories could be built to optimize the supply chain. So far in 2017, the Model 3 has come out with the same specifications as its predecessors, but at a much cheaper price.
Currently, Tesla is developing new prototypes and according to its website it has more than 100,000 employees around the world. It also reported production of 71,177 pages of the Model S, and 1,298,434 of the Model 3, in 2022.
According to the latest financial report, Tesla delivered 1.31 million electric cars in 2022, a new record and 40 percent more than in 2021; but its figure is lower than that of Wall Street.
The company of the world’s second richest man has set himself the goal of increasing sales by 50 percent every year for a long time.
