This weekend the tenth installment of the “Fast and Furious” franchise won the race against “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” to easily take the number one spot at the box office. “Fast X” earned $67.5 million in ticket sales at 4,046 theaters in the United States and Canada, according to Universal Pictures estimates on Sunday.
It is the lowest-grossing installment in the series at the box office, which was topped by “Furious 7″‘s $142.2 million opening, the only film in the franchise to top $100 million since its inception. The domestic debut of “Fast X” is just above the top three. The last film, “F9”, opened in 2021 with 70 million.
But it’s also a series that has generally made most of its money internationally. “Fast X” opened internationally in 84 markets, playing in over 24,000 theaters, where it earned an estimated $251.4 million. The main market was China with 78.3 million, followed by Mexico with 16.7 million. And that adds up to a $319 million global opening, the franchise’s third biggest.
Directed by Louis Leterrier, “Fast X” brings back a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster and several newcomers, including villains played by Brie Larson, Rita Moreno and Jason Momoa. The growing cast also includes Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood and Helen Mirren.
On the other hand, in its third weekend, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” took second place, earning an estimated $32 million in North American theaters. It has now earned $266.5 million domestically and $659.1 million globally.
Third place went to another Universal juggernaut, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which is now in its seventh weekend since release.
According to Comscore, ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada are estimated to be:
