The Timberwolves edged out Phoenix in a thrilling fourth quarter

For three quarters, Monday’s game was a slog.

Phoenix and Minnesota couldn’t find anything offensive in the Target Center.

Then came the fourth quarter, and a thriller broke out. The two teams went back and forth, playing one after the other. Karl-Anthony Towns was throwing the mowers for the Wolves, with Devin Booker and Chris Paul answering.

In the end, the Star Guards won as the Phoenix, the defending Western Conference champions, defeated Minnesota 99–96 at Target Center.

Paul scored 19 points in the fourth quarter, while Booker added nine.

In the final seconds of the game, with Minnesota down to two, D’Angelo Russell missed an open look from the deep. Anthony Edwards stopped the offensive counterattack, but he quickly turned it around.

There was no shame in Monday’s effort for Minnesota, which defended well for most of the game and made enough plays to win. Phoenix (10-3) is just that good.

That’s the problem when you lose to bad teams, as Minnesota did earlier this season—the good guys are really, really hard to beat. Still, Monday’s performance could be one to build on, if the Wolves can put forth that relentless effort and energy—something Minnesota has yet to do this season.

It was an offensive slog for both the teams for the first 36 minutes. Give credit to the defense, of course, but there was also zero shotmaking present for most of the evening. For whichever team he went down for, every make felt like a big shot in the arm.

Anthony Edwards had perhaps his worst offensive performance of all time. He took 2 for 11 off the ground, including 1 for going deep with six turnovers. To his credit, he has 11 rebounds to go with six assists.

The towns were responsible for most of the offensive success. On his birthday, Towns was lighting up the field, finishing with 35 points on 10-for-19 shooting. But Wolves (4-9) couldn’t get any look at him with the game on the line in the final minutes.
