The Aquaman 2 trailer introduces us to the DC hero’s son, so let’s take a look at what happens in the comics.
A spectacular trailer for Aquaman 2, directed by James Wan, is already online and offers us a fascinating insight into the new adventure of Arthur Curry, played by the charismatic Jason Momoa. He has since become a father and will have a lot more to lose this time.
The opening sequence of the trailer offers an unexpected glimpse into the domestic life of Arthur Curry, who now lives peacefully with his wife, father and son in a picturesque seaside home. This quiet scene stands in stark contrast to the epic action-adventure sequences that follow, but for avid fans of the Aquaman comics, this introduction may have a deeper, more tragic meaning.

What happens in the comics?
Arthur Curry is the father of a boy named Arthur Curry Jr., affectionately known as Aquababy. Although in Aquaman 2 we see his son living on land, in the pages of the comics Aquababy lives primarily underwater in Atlantis. This young heir to aquatic royalty possesses some of his parents’ superpowers, such as the ability to manipulate water, and despite his young age, he goes on adventures underwater thanks to his supernatural abilities.
However, Aquababy’s story in the comics is marked by tragedy. Black Manta, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the upcoming film, kidnaps and murders the young Aquababy.
Aquababy’s tragic death in the comics occurs in Adventure Comics #452, published in August 1977. In this shocking story, Black Manta manages to capture Aquaman, his companion Aqualad, and his beloved son Aquababy. The villain traps Aquababy in a bubble which begins to fill with air, a deadly situation for the child as his underwater physiology does not allow him to breathe air. Black Manta demands that Aquaman kill Aqualad, or vice versa, to stop this macabre mechanism. Aquaman hatches a desperate plan to thwart Black Manta, but when he finally frees Aquababy from the bubble, it’s too late – his son has died.
This tragic event has profound implications for future Aquaman stories.
Mera, played by Amber Heard in the DC films, mentally breaks down and leaves Aquaman. Then, in an attempt at reconciliation, Aquaman accidentally seriously injures Mera and leaves her for dead. This tragic event marks a rift in the characters’ relationships.
Although the Aquaman 2 trailer doesn’t reveal the fate of Arthur Curry’s son in the film, the introduction of this character into the plot raises a number of unknowns. But there will probably be a kidnapping, but the child certainly won’t die. It would be too disgusting to be a film for all audiences.
We’ll find out when Aquaman 2 will be released on December 22, 2023.
