The United Kingdom is urging Spain to invest in renewables despite offshore wind woes

Sunak’s Government is studying the division of auctions to separate tenders for offshore wind turbines from others after groups such as Iberdrola decided not to participate in the final bid.

The United Kingdom currently encourages the Spanish companies to double their commitment to renewable energy country and, especially, coastal winds. The British Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Graham Stuart, recalled that the Government remains committed to achieving 50 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power by 2030, compared to today which is 14 GW. The offshore wind is London’s main bet

Offshore air is London’s main commitment, though not the only one, to reach 2030 with net zero emissions.

During his speech at an event organized by Places called Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the United Kingdom, led by Eduardo Barrachina, Stuart clearly refers to Scottish Power, a subsidiary of Iberdrola, and EDP, whose renewable headquarters are in Madrid. The conservative politician assured that the country has no problem turn to foreign companies, such as the Spanishif you need the technology and experience to develop the renewable park.

Last Friday’s auction, 3.7 GW was given (EDP got more than 50 MW), but there is no sea breeze because the numbers do not work, as the sector has already warned. The planned maximum price, which is 44 pounds per megawatt/hour, is considered too low after rising costs due to high inflation.

In bids, offers all technologies and the capacity is given in the most economical proposals. Asked if offshore wind could be isolated in the future with the goal of not repeating this problem, Stuart said yes under study. He also stated that the auction will not be repeated and that the result of Friday is a result of the Government always putting the interests of the citizens first.

Renewables are increasing

Stuart defended his country’s trajectory in recent years, where renewables represent 48% of electricity consumption and where it is expected that coal will not be used next year in energy generation.

The Secretary of State for Net Zero emphasized the “commitment” of renewables and the “stability” of the system, but the companies pointed to at least three problems: the provision of PERMIT very strict outside of Scotland, they have to different auctions depending on the technology (at least, breaking offshore wind) and the red should be reinforced to avoid interruptions.
