The United States coordinates with the Taliban the departure of 100 civilians who still live in Afghanistan

Doha, Qatar – The State Department is working in coordination with the Taliban to facilitate additional charter flights from Kabul for US forces and those trying to leave Afghanistan after diplomatic withdrawal, the secretary of state said Tuesday, Antony Blinken.

Blinken appeared at a news conference with senior Qatari diplomats and defense officials on Tuesday.

The official said the Taliban has guaranteed safe passage for those seeking to leave Afghanistan without proper travel documents. He assured that the United States would force the Taliban to fulfill its commitment.

The secretary said the United States believes “about 100” US citizens are still in Afghanistan and are seeking to leave the country. The State Department had previously said the figure was between 100 and 200 people.

Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin are in Qatar to thank the country for helping transit thousands of people evacuated from Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of the country on August 15.
