The United States had to fight to defeat Germany

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The United States team worked hard to reach the World Cup with an unbeaten record against Germany.

Anthony Edwards scored 34 points, Austin Reaves and Tyrese Haliburton each added 16 points without a substitution and the United States recovered from a 16-point deficit in the second half to beat Germany 99-91 in their final warm-up game on Sunday to secure the World Cup to the Philippines.

An 18-0 run in the final minutes saved the Americans, who finished the show season 5-0.

“What I like is that we now know that they have courage,” said US coach Steve Kerr. “But we can improve a lot because we have a higher cap than a lot of other teams because most of those teams have been together. (Germany) were together. You are really good. We feel we have more room to grow. And on the way to Manila, we have to keep working and improving.”

Edwards was brilliant, making 11 of 21 shots and shooting 8 of 8 off the line. The rest of the American starters collectively scored 25 points; Edwards alone had nine more than that.

“It was the best game I’ve ever had,” said Edwards.

Kerr added: “He’s our man without a doubt. ‘He knows. Now the rest of the team knows.”

The fact is, Edwards didn’t do it alone. The comeback began late in the third as Haliburton scored 11 points in under three minutes, taking the USA from a 16-point deficit to three points and raising hopes.

However, Germany insisted. Moritz Wagner’s three gave Germany a 86:77 lead with 6:58 to go.

The Germans missed their next eight shots and the Americans scored the next 18 points of the game, finally reclaiming the lead with 2:15 left to play with Mikal Bridges’ hat-trick.

“It all comes down to buckle up and defend yourself,” Haliburton said.

Franz Wagner scored 17 points for Germany, who received 16 points and 10 assists from Dennis Schröder and 14 points from Moritz Wagner.

Germany became the first team that summer to lead the United States by more than four points, but failed to claim victory.

Team USA has only been together for two and a half weeks but has had little trouble coming together. The Americans opened the pre-season with a 117-74 win over Puerto Rico in Las Vegas, then traveled to Spain to beat Slovenia (92-62, despite the Slovenians playing without Luka Doncic) and Spain (98-88). From Spain they traveled to Abu Dhabi to complete the preparations. On Friday they defeated Greece 108:86 and crowned the whole thing with a victory over the Germans.
