One of the aspects that continue to solidify in the new administration is the relationship with the United States of America. In an interview with FM, Francisco Palmieri, the ambassador of the United States in charge of Colombia, talked about the important aspects of his relationship with the Gu-stave Peter administration. According to Palmieri, both governments continue to be great partners in the fight against drug trafficking.
How are the relations between Washington and Peter’s Government?
We are working with this Government, its work to achieve the Supreme Peace, as well as its work in the event of events, in the implementation of the Peace, the fight against the drug trade, strengthening the commercial trade between the two countries. In this last respect, the United States is the most important partner, and so is Colombia.
How is the United States keeping track of drug trafficking in Colombia?
We have a long history of working together with Columbia. As for the new government, we adapt to its priorities, but we also have an advantage and this is that before the 2022 presidential elections we adapted a holistic plan to protect the environment and its link to drug trafficking, deforestation, and illegal mining. . We understand the power in the countryside and the importance of saving lives there, with direct efforts to improve security.
Are you worried that in dealing with criminal gangs the pressure of the fight against drugs is reduced?
On the other hand, after the start of the new government we are going to receive regular extradition. Understanding is important, we hear how the negotiations with the criminal gangs are handled. But we continue to be great allies in the fight against drug trafficking.
Do they continue to grow crops illegally?
Of course, since the last five years, illegal crops have increased in the country. Against this aforesaid government was fought. However, we understand that in some countries, where there are no legal development opportunities, the very thing that needs to be done is to create that very thing. What is your position regarding the National Government’s proposal to suspend extraditions for cooperation in Colombia?

The two nations share a history with their independence. It is the supreme discretion of the Government. Are you worried about the national government’s intention to allow coca crops in the country?
We are looking for ways to help improve the intersection effort. They have set a goal of eradication, which will be met. But at the same time, I think there are other tools that we can use in the fight against drug trafficking.
Do you welcome the legalization of cocaine?
No, we do not support the legalization of cocaine.
How do you see that drug dealers can be the beneficiaries of the entire Peace?
In talks with the government we are trying to understand what is going on about this matter.
What can be expected from the issue of Colombian visas to travel to the United States?
The United States is Colombia’s largest trade and investment partner thanks to the Free Trade Agreement. More than 40% of Colombian agricultural exports go to the United States. The influx of people is also part of that strategy, which I know the ambassador has proposed to the United States of America. We are working on reviewing the requirements if Colombian visas can be eliminated.
