The US has issued security guidance to help temples protect themselves

The United States Department of Homeland Security has issued guidance to help churches, synagogues, mosques and other houses of worship protect themselves at a time of heightened interfaith tensions in the country.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), an agency of the department, works with religious groups to prepare for and prevent violence against their facilities and congregations. David Mussington, who manages infrastructure security at CISA, said the purpose of the 16-page document is to present useful information in an easy-to-understand format.

“It’s designed to be clear, with little jargon, and serve as a guide and help for us to help them,” Mussington said.

The document, called “Physical Security Performance Goals for Faith-Based Communities,” explains measures for protecting religious facilities: for example, reducing hedges and other decorations so that attackers They cannot hide behind it or provide only the necessary information during online services.

He recommends making plans in case something unexpected happens, such as a meeting, or dedicating a place to remember the people who were affected by what happened. Mussington said the guidance was developed over several months in response to concerns raised by various faith communities about how to protect themselves.

“In this environment of increasing threats, the Department of Homeland Security is committed to protecting the right of every American to live, express and worship their faith freely and safely,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement. . “The physical security performance goals we published today provide churches, synagogues, mosques and other religious institutions with affordable, readily available and easily implemented strategies to improve their security and reduce the danger to their communities.”

CISA offices and the agency’s network of 125 security advisors across the country will distribute the document.
