“While visiting the detention center, I saw the threat posed by this group of detained fighters of the Islamic State. Among those detained in Syria and Iraq is the true “Detained Islamic Army”. If released, this group poses a major regional threat and beyond,” said US General Michael Kurilla, commander Centcom.
The general announced in a statement that he had specifically visited the Syrian detention center in Hasaka, where more than 5,000 members of the Islamic State are being held. He also explained that the attack on the center in January 2022, in which thousands of fighters fled and 400 jihadists and 121 SDF soldiers died, continues to have structural damage that could be verified with the eye.
FDS and detention center authorities have warned that the detained population is subject to further radical violence, warning that the situation could be a “ticking time bomb”.
However, Kurilla indicated that his intention was to “continue to detain them securely” while working with the countries of origin to repatriate them and find a procedural way to rehabilitate them.
On the other hand, he regretted the situation in which the minors were involved in the displacement camp, when he moved to Al Hol, which brought more than 51,000 people, 90 percent of whom were wounded women and children, and Roj, back home. 2,500 people, 96 percent of whom were women and children “relatives” were killed or captured.
“Al Hol camp is the focus of human suffering, and the only long-term solution is the timely and successful repatriation, rehabilitation and reintegration of camp residents in their countries and communities of origin,” he emphasized.
Kurilla visited US forces and met with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) this week to report on the threat posed by the jihadist group.
