The United States assured that it is going to the UN General Assembly with an outstretched hand to the countries of the Global South to whom recalled that many of its problems were caused or exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“The Russians want us to believe that it is the West’s fault, that they are not to blame. But The food insecurity, economic problems and inflation that many of these countries face are due to war“ White House Security Council spokesman John Kirby said at a press conference.
Kirby stated that “obviously the Ukrainian people continue to pay the highest costs,” but He recalled that many developing countries were affected by food shortages and Russia’s decision to suspend the Black Sea grain export agreement.
On the other hand, the spokesman stated that the President of the United States, Joe Biden will talk about what his administration is doing to “address global health, economic and food insecurity challenges” during his speech to the UN General Assembly this Tuesday..
It will also highlight “the need for infrastructure investment in countries of the Global South.”
Kirby also recalled that Biden has openly advocated for reforming multilateral development banks to make it easier to lend to low- and middle-income countries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will also take part in the high-level week of the UN General Assembly; and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The UN Secretary General, António Guterres has lowered expectations of any progress in resolving the war in Ukraine a conflict in which many African and Latin American countries have chosen neutrality.
Biden will also be the only leader of the five UN Security Council members to attend the gathering in the absence of the leaders of China, Russia, the United Kingdom and France.
“The president is confident in advancing concrete climate, global development and health initiatives that do not depend on whether or not a particular leader comes along,” Kirby said.
