MEXICALI – The National Occupation and Employment Survey of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reports that, with a growth of 2 percent compared to the same period last year, in the second quarter of 2023 62.5 percent of workers in Baja California will are in the formal sector and have social security.
Baja California is one of the four entities in the country with the lowest labor informality at the national level with 37.5 percent, along with other States on the northern border between Mexico and the United States such as Coahuila, Chihuahua and Nuevo León.
The figures show that in Baja California there are one million 803 thousand 781 working people, of which one million 127 thousand 99 are in the formal sector and have access to work benefits that improve their quality of life and their families.
The Secretary of Economy and Innovation, Kurt Ignacio Honold Morales, indicated that the largest share of employment according to company size continues to be in micro, small and medium-sized companies (MSMEs), which participate in 60.2 percent of working population.
From the second quarter of 2023 to the same period of 2022, by sector of economic activity, the tertiary sector is the one with the best result with a balance of 17,498 new jobs; in which social services came first, contributing 14,427 people employed, followed by commerce with 12,608 and restaurants and accommodation services with 8,724, most. While the primary sector registered a negative balance of 4,985 employees; and the second is less than 13 thousand 475.
Of the 95,421 workers in the northern border, that is, they live in Mexico and work in the United States, 45.5 percent are in the State of Baja California, which is a symptom of the strength of Baja California.
The group of unemployed reached the level of 42,604 people.
This number is lower than obtained in the second quarter of 2022, when the state registered 46,506 people.
This means that in this second quarter an unemployment rate of 2.3 percent was obtained, compared to 2.5 percent obtained in the same quarter of 2022.
