The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has indicated today that the work of its Initiative “Pueblos con Encanto” Mincetur continues to be recognized around the world.
On this occasion, he said that the United World Tourism (UNWTO) has awarded the seal of “Best Tourism Villages” to the towns of Lamas (San Martín) and Raqchi (Cusco), in a ceremony in Saudi Arabia (Al-Ula).
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Luis Fernando Helguero, this review distinguishes towns in which tourism preserves their cultures and traditions, celebrates diversity, creates opportunities and protects biodiversity. In this second 2022 edition, Peru named Lamas, Raqchi and Yanque, after an invitation from the UNWTO.
We are happy to be recognized as two of the three towns in this competition. This motivates us and allows us to continue to ensure that tourists have the best experience during their visit to the country,” said Minister Luis Fernando Helguero.
Award and career
With the recognition of the best tourism villages, UNWTO seeks to recognize villages that constitute notable examples of rural tourism with recognized cultural and natural values that preserve and promote rural and community values, products and ways of life.
It also aims to identify the work that has been developed to use innovative and sustainable approaches that contribute to tourism development mechanisms.
The awards had the participation of 32 people from 22 countries of the world (selected more than 130 applications from 57 countries).
Each was evaluated in relation to the care, promotion and conservation of its natural resources, economic and environmental sustainability, development potential and integration of the tourism value chain.
In addition, the duty of the community and its authorities at local, regional and national level was appreciated, to work collaboratively in the planning and development of the town as a destination city, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the same Organization.
Lamas is recognized as the first “Chaming Town” in the Peruvian jungle. The distinction was delivered by Mincetur in October last year.
