For Eastern conservatives, it was just like watching a train pull away on the tracks and leave behind. All five of the new Idaho counties were strong in November for Mr. Trump voted – supplemented by Lake County, where he received nearly 80 percent of the vote – only to see the state’s Electoral College vote for the Democratic candidate; Mr. Biden won 10 counties and lost in 26, but those ten included Portland.
“Most of us in rural Oregon realize that this is all the Portland / Willamette Valley area wants,” he said. McCarter said. Do we have the freedom to vote who we want to govern? That is the question. ”
Although there is sometimes talk of secession accompanied by the polarization of politics across the country, dreams of recreating the American map were particularly resonant in the West, where state borders were too late.
In the late 1930s, residents of Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota dreamed of forging a conglomeration of like-minded communities in a new state that would call itself Absaroka. The idea of a sprawling new political entity called Cascadia that would stretch through the Northwest from the Pacific Ocean to Canada has been waving in local consciousness for decades. More recently, residents of Northern California and southern Oregon came up with the idea of a state called Jefferson.
“In previous decades, it was the southern provinces, now it’s the east, but it’s the same feeling – feeling powerless,” said Bruce A. Weber, the recently retired director of the Rural Studies program at Oregon State University. “The desire to have influence and respect is universal, and it’s part of what drives a lot of behavior in this country right now.”
Part of the argument for shifting the boundaries, according to Citizens for Greater Idaho, which arranged the vote for secession, is that conservative liberal areas are fleeing to join Americans in more conservative areas. (Witness the most recent California exodus to Texas.)
Why not give the Conservatives more space, according to the group?
“The addition of Oregon counties to Idaho will put some pressure on Idaho’s housing market,” the group said. “It gives people more provinces to choose from as they move to Idaho to gain political refuge in blue states.”
