There are new mobility solutions and incremental changes: so convert your car to LPG

Having a car with the DGT ECO label has become the objective of many drivers to be able to enter and drive through the new ZBE, Low Emissions Zones. But if you don’t want or can’t buy a new car, one option is to convert your gasoline to LPG. What? Because, as pointed out by Astrave, the Association of Vehicle Transformers, “All gasoline cars that have been registered since 2006 and keep beyond the Euro 4 standard (Euro 6 is in force), can obtain the ECO label with the transformation to LPG”.

Hence, conversions to LPG have skyrocketed in recent months. In 2022, transformations of the movement of vehicles to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) increased by 36.5% in years and reached a volume of 3,512 units, according to Astrave data. The data also indicates that Toyota and Dacia will be the most transformed car brands in 2022.

LPG cars are cheaper to refuel with gasoline or diesel because this fuel is cheaper than the other two. Also, transforming a gasoline car into LPG, the procedure is not so rare and can be easily accomplished.

However, in Spain there are hardly 100,000 vehicles with this type of mechanics and they are mainly for professional use. Meanwhile, other European countries are promoting the purchase of this type of machine.

Convert your car to LPG by passing through ITV

These cars can be converted to LPG

To convert a car to LPG, it must meet certain technical requirements. In addition, the factory that carries out the transformation must be approved by the Ministry of Industry.

Vehicles that can be converted to LPG are those with gasoline engines and a maximum power of 460 CV. And note that you can convert cars approved for Euro 3 from 1995 to 2000 and from 2001, but in these cases they will not receive the DGT Eco label that corresponds to LPG vehicles.

Yes, they will be able to carry the ECO label once the vehicles have changed from Euro 4 to Euro 6 regulations, with all the benefits associated with this label.

How to convert your car to LPG?

As KIND reminds us, the LPG conversion kit must be from a special or official factory and approved by the Industry. It will be the mechanics of the same establishment who are in charge of passing the ITV before delivering the modified vehicle, so that, before driving with our new LPG, the ITV technicians must approve the completed modification.

Steps to convert our gasoline car to LPG:

  • Life is the investment of life. Usually placed on the spare wheel. The LPG tank does not replace the fuel tank, it is completely different and cannot be changed by the user. LPG tanks have a capacity of between 35 and 150 litres.

  • Installation of LPG filling nozzle near gasoline nozzle. If you are going to Europe, you will need to buy adapters.

  • An assembly of pipes through which the gas travels from the tank to the engine.

  • To convert the institution. The main tank turns the liquid into a gas, which is the state in which it will enter the engine. It is located in the area in front of the engine.

  • The position of the injector rack for LPG. Different injectors are where the gasoline enters the engine. The cylinder head gasket and the cylinder head are protected by adding a special additive due to the higher gas pressure required.

  • The installation of sensors that measure, among other parameters, the amount of LPG left in the tank.
  • The replacement unit controls and calibrates the injection of gasoline and LPG.
