These 157 House Republicans Voted Against Protection for Same-Sex Marriage

on the house A bill to protect same-sex marriage was passed in federal law on Tuesday, amid fears it could be in jeopardy following a US Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade earlier this year.

The vote was 267 to 157, with each Democrat voting in favor. Of the 211 House GOP members, only 47 supported the bill.

Several House GOP leaders, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Cal.) and House Minority Whip Steve Scalis (R-La.), voted against the measure. McCarthy Told He voted against it because “it was a political game by the Democrats.”

Democrats cited threats to same-sex marriage as suggested by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who in Roe v. Wade to re-examine the issue in light of the court’s decision to overturn the protection of abortion rights. Several GOP senators have “wrongly” held a 2015 Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage.

Gay marriage is widely popular among the American people. Last month, Gallup found that 71% of Americans support it, including most Republicans.
