In 2021, Stellantis announced that it would have three dedicated platforms for monocoque chassis EVs, in addition to a specific one for those who use stringers and crossbars, like pick-ups. This is the one that is under the skin of the RAM 1500 REV and, like the rest, they respond to the name STLA. This family of platform – read as “estela” – responds to Stellantis’ need to unify the bases that will use the models of all brands and that should allow it, according to the Dare Forward 2030 plan, to achieve a mix of electric vehicle sales of 100 percent battery in that year and 50 percent, including light-duty trucks, in the United States.
The first one from which Stellantis provides the largest number of data, already with more certainties than impressions and than what we had a couple of years ago, is the STLA Medium, designed for electric cars that will be able to reach a range of more than 700 km with the battery pack that the group calls Performance, while with the Standard they will exceed 500 km. Always compliant with the WLTP. Thus, the maximum useful energy that its batteries will house will be up to 98 kWh, always located under the floor of the passenger compartment.
The STLA Medium will use a 400 volt electrical architecture with the aim that, in some of the models that use it, consumption drops to 14 kWh/100 km. This number is really low.
In addition, the propulsion system that Stellantis proposes should be able to charge its battery from 20 to 80 percent of its capacity in 27 minutes, at a rate of 2.4 kWh per minute. This would mean being able to receive loads with direct current with powers of 185 kW.
The battery modules would be arranged in a single layer and would have best-in-class packaging cost, Stellantis says, which would improve production volumes. It would contribute to this that, regardless of the capacity that the batteries hold, the size of the structure that contains them or their cooling system would not vary.
Additionally, vehicles with the STLA Medium, which will be available worldwide, may have front-wheel drive, in the case of having a single engine; or total, with two, in the case of incorporating a second rear. The expected power range is between 218 CV (160 kW) and 388 CV (285 kW) covering all types of categories: passenger cars, SUVs, crossovers.
The only limitations would be that its length is between 4.3 and 3.9 metersthat is to say, it ranges from the equivalent of a car like the Citroën ë-C4 to a DS 9, as long as their wheelbases are between 2.70 and 2.90 m. In the case of the versions that could circulate outside the asphalt, the free height of 22 cm, while the tires can be up to 750 mm in diameter, that is, with rims of up to 20 “or even 21”, where appropriate, if the profile is low.
The STLA family of platforms (Small/Medium/Large/Frame) will be combined with the implementation of the STLA Brain architecture, the STLA SmartCockpit and STLA AutoDrive platforms, which will allow over-the-air software upgrades and hardware upgrades. Likewise, this family is designed to admit cells with chemistries not yet used today, already without nickel or cobalt, and even with solid electrolytes.
