High price, high consumption, high fixed costs: an SUV can be a quarter more expensive than the base model from which it is derived. But there are exceptions. Here are the cheapest entry-level models.
Easy entry, plenty of storage space, a good view of the traffic situation: the SUV has a number of advantages. That is why it is immensely popular. Almost every third new car is already an SUV.
However, you pay a high price for these advantages:
- The supposed plus in safety does not exist – SUVs are just as safe or unsafe as other cars.
- The models are often based on normal limousines – but they are significantly more expensive: Even in the compact class, the surcharge can be 3,000 euros and more.
- Their powerful engines, heavy weight and beefy shape lead to high fuel costs. The ADAC calls an additional consumption of up to a third.
- Added to this are the higher fixed costs.
All this makes driving an SUV an expensive pleasure. In total, the monthly costs can be a quarter higher than with the standard model, says the ADAC.
Reason enough to take a closer look at these costs – ideally before making the purchase. The data from the traffic club will help. They include everything that makes the price comparison so confusing.
The cheapest entry-level models can be found here in the overview. The table also shows their total costs per month and broken down to the individual kilometer.

That’s how the ADAC calculated it
In addition to the purchase price, the ADAC includes the depreciation, fuel, oil change and car wash, insurance, workshop and tire costs in its calculation.
This is based on a holding period of five years and an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers.
