These Are the World’s “Best” Cities for Tourism

(CNN) — Travel has changed in many ways since the pandemic began, but one change for the better is the new push towards rural tourism. Where earlier we intended to organize city trips, the lockdown left us dreaming of the outdoors, and that still hasn’t changed.

So here are 32 new rural spots to add to your list. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has released its second annual list of the world’s “best” rural towns.

It’s a departure from the usual Instagrammable list of top tourist destinations. UNWTO is an agency of the United Nations that focuses on responsible tourism, so these cities were chosen for how they are increasing the number of visitors without ruining what they come to see . The UNWTO said in a statement:

“The award recognizes rural destinations that embrace tourism as a driver for growth and new employment and income opportunities while preserving and promoting community values and products. The initiative also seeks to promote innovation and sustainability in all its aspects. Recognizes cities for their commitment to sustainable development – economic, social and environmental – and to focus on the development of tourism in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A total of 32 from around the world made the list out of 136 proposals submitted by 57 UNTWO member states. There is no classification; Instead, destinations are listed alphabetically by country.

Each country was allowed to submit up to three towns for consideration, with only Spain managing to qualify all three of its towns. Rupit, Alcazar and Guadalupe entered the list. Its neighbor, Portugal, got an entry: Castelo Novo, one of 12 historic towns surrounded by the Serra da Gardunha mountain range.

Austria starts the list with Zell am See. A small town rather than a village, situated on the shores of the peaceful Lake Zell in the shadow of the Kitzbühel Alps. His brother, Wagren, owns a small ski resort near Salzburg.

Next is Chile, and its gateway is Puqueldon, the largest of nine cities on Lemuy Island in the Chiloe Archipelago in Chile. China made it onto the list with two cities: Dazhai in the northern province of Guangxi and Jingzhou in Chongqing, southwest China.

A particularly interesting addition to the list is Chok Mountain Village, an ecotourism village on Chok Mountain, about 200 miles (321 kilometers) northwest of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. The farming community uses solar energy, biogas and ecological waste management, conducts sustainable land management and has pioneered fair trade tourism, where visitors can purchase local honey, coffee, herbal medicines and beer as souvenirs of their stay. can buy.

The initiative, called “Best Tourist Towns”, aims to combat rural overpopulation, promote gender equality, innovation, infrastructure and investment, and reduce regional income and development inequality, while promoting sustainable tourism and reducing emissions and waste. The cities on the list have a “clear commitment to innovation and sustainability in all its aspects: economic, social and environmental,” UNWTO said in a statement.
