Los Cabos; BCS,- Derived from the earthquakes recently recorded in Baja California Sur, employees of the National Seismological Service attached to the Institute of Geophysics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, in coordination with Metmex, are preparing a study to determine the causes determine the activity.
According to the National Seismological Service, 25 earthquakes were recorded in Baja California Sur last week. The largest event occurred on September 14 at 12:32 p.m. with a magnitude of 4.2 and an epicenter 72 kilometers north of Santa Rosalía.
Jorge Alberto Garza Cosío, director of METMEX, points out that recently he has been receiving daily reports of seismic activity:
“It was something very remarkable because I get reports every day that we get reports or reports of this seismic activity practically every day, that they hear noises at night or even during the day that are believed to be coming from there.” Subsurface, and in fact when shakes, some kind of noise or vibration is created from the subsurface.
For this reason, the National Seismological Service, affiliated to the Institute of Geophysics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, is preparing, in coordination with Metmex, a study to promote the culture of prevention.
The director of METMEX stated: “A study is being carried out based on the earthquakes generated. In fact, for two to three years we have seen this seismic activity occur in the northern part of the municipality, especially in the Las Casitas area, the Santiago area in Miraflores, but now we have to see how long it will last “With this Study to determine what is causing this seismic activity.”
The results of this study are expected to be available in a few months, which can provide concrete data and determine coordinated actions with the Civil Protection of the State of Baja California Sur.
