At least three people were killed and two others were injured after an armed student opened fire at the University of Virginia (UVA) in the US city of Charlottesville.
Police on Monday arrested the alleged perpetrator of the University of Virginia shooting that killed three people in the US city of Charlottesville, who has been identified as a student at the center. Christopher Darnell Jones.
Tim Longo, Chief of the University of Virginia Police Department, received notice of his arrest during a press conference in Charlottesville (Virginia) about last night’s events.
The incident took place in a parking lot on the university campus, where three African-American students and members of the downtown football team were killed and two other students were wounded by gunfire.
The victims were identified by the media Devin Chandler, LeVell Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry.
University of Virginia President Jim Ryan said in the same appearance before the media that the shooting occurred on a bus that was taking several students to campus after a trip to Washington DC.
The accused fled after the attack. He faced three charges of second degree murder, three for use of a firearm and another for a misdemeanor.
A police spokesman said the alleged assailant, 22, was seen driving a black vehicle with Virginia license plates on campus.
In the past, a university threat assessment team had investigated him for “some sort of hazing”, however the investigation was closed due to lack of cooperation from witnesses.
During that investigation, it was discovered that Jones was implicated in a previous criminal case related to a violation of regulations on the obligation to carry concealed firearms in public.
