‘They killed my brother’: They demand justice after the death of a young Guatemalan man in Lawrenceville

Atlanta, Georgia. – A family of Guatemalan descent is calling for justice following the death of Rodrigo Chub-Choc, 21, who was killed by a car in the 100 block of Grayson Highway in Lawrenceville.

According to the Lawrenceville Police Department report, the driver responsible, Leonardo Esparza, 46, told officers he made a right turn onto Grayson Highway from Gwinnett Drive and entered the left southbound lane.

He added that he was trying to move into the middle lane to make a turn when the pedestrian came in and hit him, throwing him into the northbound lane.

The report indicates that Rodrigo was hit several times by other vehicles on the road.

Police point out that Esparza, the first driver who hit Rodrigo, fled the scene and later turned himself in to police.

Leonardo is charged with first-degree murder, hit-and-run and aggravated assault by motor vehicle. He was given a $33,600 bond.

Rodrigo’s family is asking the community to help raise funds to cover funeral costs and repatriate the body to his native Guatemala.
