In recent hours, the Chilean Meteorological Directorate (DMC) has issued a warning of moderate to heavy rainfall for regions in the south of the country, triggering the warning ahead of national holiday celebrations.
In total, there are six regions in the south and south of Chile where warnings and precipitation warnings are in place for the coming days. The heavy rains are due to a frontal system that is located in the national territory.
Regions with a warning for moderate to heavy rainfall
The DMC issued a warning for moderate to heavy rainfall in the Los Ríos and Los Lagos regions from Thursday morning, September 14th to Friday morning, September 15th. According to the company, the following rainfall would occur in the affected areas:
River region
- Mountain Range: 75 to 95 millimeters on Thursday 14th
Los Lagos Region
- Precordillera: 70 to 95 millimeters on Thursday 14.
- Mountain situation: 50 to 70 millimeters / less than or equal to 5 centimeters of snow, on Thursday 14.
- Inner coast: 80 to 105 millimeters on Thursday 14.
- Southern Mountains: 75 to 95 millimeters / less than or equal to 5 centimeters of snow.
Due to this rainfall and in addition to two warnings, one for normal to moderate winds and one for normal to moderate rainfall in other sectors, Senapred issued two preventive early warnings, one for the Los Ríos region and one for Los Lagos.
Regions under a normal to moderate rainfall warning
The DMC also has three normal to moderate rainfall warnings. The first is in the Magallanes region and lasts until the afternoon of Wednesday September 13th. The affected areas are the northern Cordillera Austral and the Northern Island.
The second warning applies to the Biobío region, which will affect the coastal areas and the coastal mountains from the night of Wednesday 13th to the afternoon of Thursday 14th September.
The latest warning of normal to moderate rainfall, in addition to a high zero isotherm, is valid for the regions of La Araucanía, Los Lagos and Aysén from the morning of Thursday September 14th to Friday September 15th. The affected areas are:
- La Araucanía Region: Foothills.
- Los Lagos Region: Chiloé and Subandean Patagonia.
- Aysén region: northern inland coast.
