With the holiday season approaching, immigration and border authorities in the Rio Grande Valley are preparing to continue reducing rates of encounters with undocumented immigrants.

From 2019 until now, no less than 20 officers per day remain at the Border Patrol checkpoint in the city of Falfurrias, the second line of custody after Río Grande, located between the border of the United States and Mexico.

The Rio Grande Valley has two of the largest defense barriers in the country, so there is a greater presence of immigration authorities to prevent the crossing of undocumented immigrants.

According to statistics from the United States Citizenship and Immigration System, they show that compared to 2022, immigration detentions in the Rio Grande Valley will be lower in 2023.

However, the number of minors crossing the border alone is a warning for the Border Patrol to redouble their efforts.

“I can tell you that it is a smaller amount than in 2022, but in any case I am talking to you about more than 300,000 people (difference), which is an amount that people can say, they are a small number , but it’s still. an amount of energy,” commented Andrés García, spokesman for the RGV Border Patrol.

After trying to cross the Rio Grande, the Falfurrias checkpoint is one of the challenges faced by illegals trying to reach the north of the state of Texas.

“This is the strongest and largest inspection post in the country and it is clear that cases are seen every day,” said Andrés García, spokesman for the RGV Border Patrol.

In recent publications on social networks, the Border Patrol indicated that last month there was an increase in seizures of drugs and narcotics from those who insisted on crossing the various points of the border.

“It is a rare day that some kind of illegal activity is not involved, not only the rate of people trying to cross here illegally, but also the issue of narcotics,” added García.

With just a few weeks left before the end of 2023, the Border Patrol is doubling down on its efforts to reduce the rate of undocumented immigrants trying to cross the border between Mexico and the United States. .

“This sector, in itself, is always one of the top 5 in the country in illegal entry. Last year we finished in fourth place, but let’s remember that we are the first place in the crossings of families and there is no accompanying children or minors “Garcia stated.
