Her name is Lexie Alford and she is a travel content creator and is said to be the youngest person in the world to have visited every country on the planet. Last Friday started a new challenge called Charge Around The Globe, which consists of traveling the world using an electric car. The model of choice is the Ford Explorer Electric.
The route starts in Nice (France), and will travel to six continents and more than 30 countries in a trip where Alford will try to show the vitality of the electric car for travel. If he succeeds, he will be the first person to do so in a car like this.
Viability of the electric car
To achieve this, the minimum requirement is to travel at least 28,968 kilometers, and must pass through two antipodal points, travel through at least five continents and start and end in the same place. RecordSetter company personnel are in various locations around the world to verify the performance.
The trip was inspired by Aloha Wanderwell, who a century ago was the first woman to travel around the world by car. On that occasion he used a gasoline Ford, and the truth is that it was not easy, because, for example, he had to pull the cows in the car through mud, sand and rivers in India. It also had to be pushed several miles to China, as the country’s civil war made refueling impossible.
On this occasion the challenge will also be made in a Ford, but electric, with the Explorer leaving from Le Hotel Royal in Nice – the same place where Aloha started the journey. The unit is a pre-production prototype, but is very similar to the final car that will go on sale next summer. In fact, it has no special changes.
As pointed out by Martin Sander, general manager of Ford Model e in Europe, “This is an epic journey that will show what is possible with an electric vehicle, because we know that the range and recharging are the two main concerns that people when they. think about switching to a 100% electric vehicle. Lexie will put the charging infrastructure to the test; if she can go around the world in a EV, this means that anyone can use it every day in Europe.
Driving skills
To better prepare, Lexie studied the car in depth and visited the design and development teams in Cologne, Germany, where she experienced the extreme temperatures of the Environmental Test Center – or “climate factory” as it is commonly known – and went through in a practical way. training at Lommel Proving Ground.
While the Aloha Wanderwell journey inspires the route, in the end Lexie will decide her own path based on, for example, bad weather conditions, unpredictable terrain or lack of charging infrastructure.
In addition, it will be supported by a team composed of security, medical, mechanical and software support personnel, who will conduct risk assessments at the start of each day.
“It’s an epic adventure, but it’s a tough one. It’s going to be tough on the Explorer, and the amount of time we’ll be alone on the road, it’s going to be tough on me and the support team,” said Lexie. “However, any worthwhile adventure must be challenging, and I look forward to exploring new places and meeting amazing people, to see how they strive to improve their corners of the world.”
Lexie’s journey will be broadcast live, with regular updates on the hashtag #ChargeAroundTheGlobe or by following the social channels @lexielimitless, @fordspain and @fordnewseurope.
