They want to connect more than 5 thousand public places

Mexico City.- Through CFE Telecom and Internet for All, the Government of Mexico intends to provide Internet service to 5,088 priority public sites this year.

With the 2023 Public Sites Connectivity Program (PCSP 2023), the federal government aims to locate and identify a total of 70,000 public sites across the country that need the most focus on social coverage for connectivity . free internet.

Without giving details of the amount of investment or the temporality in which these places will have internet, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) explained that the PCSP also envisages that telecom operators can deploy their own internet services.

“Another relevant element highlighted by the PCSP 2023 for the choice of public sites is affordability, i.e. the price level of connectivity offers in urban and rural areas,” the agency explained in a decree issued by the Official Gazette of the Federation (DoF).

With a second project called “Smart Village, Sustainable Well-Being”, SICT ensures that it contributes to coverage in communities located in rural areas or without internet service, to improve their quality of life and level of well-being. can be increased.

Based on data from the National Survey on Availability and Use of Information Technology in Households (Final 2021), the agency said there are 88.6 million internet users in the country, representing 75.6 per cent of the population aged six years or more.

Of the total internet users, 81.6 per cent live in urban areas.

Smartphones, TVs and laptops are the three main means of connecting to the Internet.

The agency stressed, “The target for the year 2025 is that entry-level broadband services should be affordable in developing countries, costing less than 2 percent of monthly gross national income per capita.”
