God knows they shouldn’t be jealous this summer: hundreds of bike couriers who roam the country’s cities despite the hot sun and hot asphalt. Always on the ball. Because in this competitive business every minute counts – even in the middle of summer.
For example, when customers order pizza and fresh salads with Just Eat for lunch at the office. The industry leader among food couriers has an “action plan” for hot days. “We caution our drivers to be careful,” says a spokesperson for Blick. “If someone doesn’t feel well because of the high temperature, one should take a break immediately.” However, so far this has not happened.
In addition, the courier is allowed more brakes if needed. Drinking water is provided by Just Eat. «Even in restaurants, our couriers have always been given something to drink on the last few hot days. We are very happy about that,” the spokesperson said. Because: They are not short of work at the moment. “With regards to the summer, we are also seeing a slight increase in orders. Many people are currently staying at home. And getting your favorite food delivered. »
“We turn down orders sometimes”
Bike couriers serving offices and laboratories are also currently sweating. “We offer quiet HQ brakes and ensure that those who work long shifts or double shifts are not fully loaded and take adequate breaks,” says Velocurier Byrne.
For example, deliveries related to medical emergencies won’t wait just because they’re hot. “But it could be that we refuse orders to protect our drivers.” Isotonic drinks are provided. And: “Basically, we take people who immediately feel uncomfortable down the street.”
“Health is the top priority”
Veloblitz, the market leader in Zurich, also keeps heat and safety couriers on its radar. Drink, drink, drink is the motto. In addition, you need to monitor salt balance through correct food intake, says a spokesperson for Blick. VERY IMPORTANT: Sunscreen!
“Personal health is always a top priority. If you need a break, you can take a break,” he says. Most couriers refreshed themselves at several fountains in Zurich. “Luckily, many of our customers are friendly and regularly serve refreshments to our couriers. Ice cream is also regularly available for refreshment at our headquarters.» However, spokespersons for Veloblitz advise against excessive tenure relief. “Clothing is an important form of sun protection.”
Extra brake by 32 degrees
The courier and their employers have entered into a collective labor agreement with Syndicom trade union. In this, employers are held accountable in extreme climatic conditions. Trade unionist David Roth (37) explains, “In the case of so-called heavy work intensity, for example, from 32 degrees, a 15-minute paid break should be taken after 45 minutes in the shade.”
Employers also have to adapt their expectations to the circumstances. « It starts with scheduling and ends with tolerance for delay in delivery. Since the work is done outside and in traffic, there is a need to be more careful.” Otherwise the risk of accident would have increased significantly.
