‘This is meaningless’: CDC is under pressure to provide data behind mask guidance

A growing number of health officials and scientists are calling on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to release information behind its decision to recommend that COVID-19 vaccines wear masks in high-transmission areas.

One of them, the president and CEO of New York City Health and Hospitals, Mitchell Katz, said he was reluctant to follow the agency’s guidelines on universal masking.

“While the CDC issued its guidance at around 3pm yesterday, they have not yet released their scientific reports on the data on which their recommendation lies,” Katz told a news conference. “I think we owe it to New Yorkers to look at the information, as you say, very carefully and understand its implications,” Katz added. “We need to focus on getting people vaccinated.”

During the news conference, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio suggested in a news conference with Katz that he delay the action around wearing a mask until the data is released.

“We evaluate the information. What’s really important is to evaluate the research behind it. That is what our team does, ”said the mayor. “We need to make sure we understand the consequences and what makes sense to do.”

Several states, cities, the White House, Congress, businesses, and federal agencies have already adopted the CDC’s latest mask guidelines. Rochelle Walensky, director of CDC, said that some people who have been vaccinated are contagious and transmit the virus to other people, which is why the use of masks is recommended for some areas.

A CDC spokesman said on Wednesday in an inquiry by The Epoch Times that the studies the agency had cited for its latest guidance had not yet been published. When it will be available is not clear.

CDC guidelines posted on its website on Tuesday cite ‘unpublished data’ as assessed by the agency’s COVID-19 response team.

Federal health officials have yet to comment publicly on the possibility that the CDC’s guidelines will not be enforced en masse, although de Blasio and several other high-democracy officials are reluctant to impose masking rules.

And it’s not just elected officials who are asking questions about the missing CDC studies and data.

“They claim that people with delta who have been vaccinated and vaccinated have similar viral load, but no one knows what that means,” said Gregg Gonsalves, an associate professor at the Yale School of Public Health. The Washington Post. “It’s pointless unless we see the data.”

Robert Wachter, chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, asked if there were more COVID-19 cases among vaccines because the virus is better and the vaccines do not hold up as well, or the effectiveness of the vaccines that start to decline, independent of the Delta ”COVID-19 variant.

“It’s three-dimensional chess, there are a hundred things at a time,” he said.

The CDC did not order people to wear masks, leaving them to states and municipalities. During the pandemic, some governors and mayors closely followed the agency’s guidelines.

Kansas City Gov. Quinton Lucas, a Democrat, said Wednesday he will institute a city-wide mask mandate that runs through Aug. 28.

Lucas explained that since the start of the pandemic, he has followed the guidelines given by the country’s leading scientific experts at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Epoch Times contacted the CDC for additional comment.
