This is the fruit that reduces the risk of dementia according to experts

Dementia is a term that describes a set of cognitive, behavioral and emotional symptoms that affect a person’s ability to perform daily activities.

It is not a disease in itself (as many think) and we tend to think that the reduction of brain activity is a natural process of aging, because it usually occurs in the elderly, but there are 90- aged people without dementia, because there are people who are younger than when they have this health problem.

What are the symptoms?

Brain damage is usually progressive, so the symptoms of dementia do not appear suddenly, but develop over time.

According to the UK Health Agency, Some of the early symptoms of dementia are:

  1. Memory loss.
  2. Concentration problems.
  3. Feeling unable to carry out daily family or home activities, for example, such as being confused while shopping at the supermarket.
  4. You are confused about the time or place you are.
  5. The humor changes.

Strawberries against dementia

Research published in the journal Nutrient and led by Professor Robert Krikorian of the University of Cincinnati, sheds light on the fact that the consumption of strawberries can reduce the risk of dementia.

“Both strawberries and blueberries contain antioxidants called anthocyanins, which have been linked to various health benefits of the berries, such as metabolic and cognitive improvements,” he said.

The study involved 30 patients between 50 and 65 years old who were overweight and had complaints of mild cognitive decline. During the 12-week period, participants were asked to refrain from consuming any type of berry fruit other than a daily packet of supplement powder that they mixed with water and drank at breakfast.

Half of the participants received powders containing the equivalent of a cup of whole strawberries (the standard serving size), while the other half received a placebo.

The participants were given tests that examined certain cognitive abilities, such as long-term memory. In addition, the researchers monitored their mood, intensity of depressive symptoms, and metabolic data throughout the study.

The results revealed that those in the strawberry powder group showed a reduction in memory interference, consistent with an overall improvement in executive ability.
