This is what BMW says about the crash with the E-Prototype

The BMW IX that caused the accident was a street-legal car of the BMW test fleet.

The accident is tragic: according to previous police findings, the 43-year-old driver of a purely electric BMW IX drove in the direction of Ulm on the B28 near Romerstein (de) on Monday evening. For reasons not yet known, the BMW suddenly turned left in oncoming traffic and caused an accident with three other vehicles. Tragic result: one dead and nine seriously injured.

On the car of the person who caused the accident, the sticker pointed to an official BMW test vehicle for autonomous driving. What prompted German law enforcement officials to describe the crash car as an “autonomous e-testing vehicle” in their message. By doing so, he fueled wild speculation in the German media about the safety of self-driving cars. Did driving a “robot car” autonomously cause an accident?
