This outdoor fitness trend will get you moving in no time

With warmer temperatures and spring in full swing, this is a great time to get outside again, especially when it comes to exercise. Fortunately, there are a slew of outdoor fitness trends that are ready to take on and will get you moving in no time. “Spring is a great time to exercise, or to start exercising again if you have not been before, as spring means ‘rebirth’,” Shaun Zetlin, founder of Zetlin Fitness, told TZR in an email . “And with the longer days and warmer temperatures (for most of us), changing seasons can inspire new habits to make a healthier version of ourselves.” Plus, for people living with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), participating in outdoor activities can be helpful in improving your mood. After all, daylight is a natural form of light therapy!

Kelly Manzone, personal trainer, says people are trying to recover their energy at the moment by restoring themselves and creating community. “There is a greater emphasis on activity that impacts and boosts improved mental health,” she told TZR in an email. “People want routines and activities that bring them joy and connection, especially in difficult times.” She adds that going outside is also helpful in relieving stress. “It is popular because it is so accessible and restorative – it is easy to grab equipment such as a workout or dumbbells and go for a quick workout outdoors. Or you can just walk around the neighborhood. At the moment we are starting to see more road races and adult activities / sports teams going on since the start of the pandemic – all of which are great activities to join if you need an extra push to get started with your fitness routine. ”

Dan Jonhenry, expert trainer at Retro Fitness, says spring is a great time for people to exercise because it’s a constructive time of year and exercising outdoors gives you a change of scenery. “Getting outside makes it feel less like exercise,” he says in an email to TZR. However, he warns that while fitness trends are a great way to get motivated and kick off a workout routine, consistency is still the key to maintaining a healthy regimen and avoiding any injuries. “With tendencies, we sometimes see people abandon the routine after three or so weeks – and injuries can happen if you push your body too hard over a short period of time,” he says. “If you want the long-term results and health benefits, it is important to keep a healthy pace, plan accordingly and plan for the future. These tendencies can be great for starting an exercise routine, but consistency and longevity are what will help you achieve the goals you are working towards.

Step & Step

Zetlin says walking will be a very popular outdoor fitness trend this spring. “People would be so excited to get outside because they were mostly at home,” he says. “It’s also a social activity to enjoy with a friend or family member and can be a quick form of exercise within even the busiest schedules.” And even though you may not think of walking as a workout, think again. There are an endless number of health benefits of walking, says the Mayo Clinic. Zetlin agrees. “It burns calories, increases bone density, promotes better balance, improves mood / emotions, aids digestion, and reduces your chances of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and arthritis,” he notes. “Some of the best methods to strengthen your walking exercises are to make them more intense through interval exercises, to take further distances, add slopes and slopes (hills) and focus on building your core, glutes and quads. to engage while moving. ”

Similarly, Cathy Spencer-Browning, VP of programming and training at MOSSA, an on-demand fitness program, thinks hiking will take more than ever this spring – whether you use footpaths, trails or explore some National Parks. “Walking has major health benefits, such as improving heart health, balance, endurance and strength of the lower abdomen,” she tells TZR in an email. “Depending on the challenge of the site, it helps to strengthen two of the six fundamental movement categories, walking and lungs, which help maintain one’s movement health. This results in a body that moves well and feels great. Walking ensures a healthy gait and lunging ensures hip mobility, balance, coordination and strength. ” Plus, according to Harvard Health Publishing, it can also help improve your mood, which will benefit your mental health.

If you add arm and / or leg weights or resistance to your hikes, you can also give an extra workout. Bala founders Natalie Holloway and Max Kislevitz say spring is a great time to improve your outdoor movement. “By resisting your outdoor walk and walk this spring, your muscles need to work harder to move this increased load against gravity,” they tell TZR in an email. “It will in turn increase power as you catch up with your friends. and enjoy the fresh air. It is a win-win. ”

Community fitness

Manzone says since we’re all been through a lot over the last two years, going outside, especially for physical activity, is a great way to reconnect with ourselves and others. “People are really hungry for a sense of community after so much time apart, which is why more individuals are returning to sports, joining running groups or participating in group fitness together (which many do outdoors!),” She says. “One of the things I both see and encourage my clients to do is focus on activities that bring you real joy.”

Manzone recommends using something you loved during your childhood and revisiting it as an adult. “It could mean joining a basketball or softball team, diving into a pool and swimming laps, or joining a running or hiking group,” she says. “Even rollerblading or rollerblading in the neighborhood – alone or with others – can be a great way to be active while having a good time.” Jonhenry agrees on running clubs and group sports. “It’s a great way to convert modality and an example of a trend you can use to make a consistent part of your lifestyle and fitness routine,” he says. “On top of that, there is a level of support that you did not have when you went to the gym alone, and now you have the social interaction that gets your fitness routine on track.”

Strength exercises

“People are embracing the simplicity and the basics of strength training lately with regard to their fitness,” says Manzone – something she thinks will continue this spring. “In terms of equipment to improve workouts, we’ve seen people looking for smaller items that are easy to store at home – whether it’s a StickMobility workout, TRX bundles, joint weights, dumbbells or kettlebells. And the wonderful thing about this type of equipment is that it is so easy to store, grab and take with you – whether it’s to a park, garage with the door open or backyard. Really anywhere. ”

Gardening

Spencer-Browning says gardening is a wonderful healthy outdoor activity that will be a trend this spring. “This may include the other fundamental exercise categories needed to improve your exercise health,” she says. “This includes bending, squatting, turning and standing from the ground up. By gardening, you will strengthen and strengthen these types of movements, which will make you feel good in your body. ” In addition, having many health benefits in nature, from reducing stress to improving your overall mental state. And with more and more individuals choosing to grow their own food – which can not only be beneficial to health but also cost-effective – they will also benefit from the workout that gardening brings.

Take fitness applications outdoors

While many people love their Pelotons and TRX workouts, spring is the perfect time to take your fitness technology devices outside. Megan Roup, renowned fitness trainer and founder of The Sculpt Society, thinks this will be a spring trend. “As the temperature starts to warm up, more of us outside are venturing out to get our workouts in,” she tells TZR in an email. “It can be a walk around your block as a warm-up and then take your favorite fitness application to a park to get your workout and bonus vitamin D. Getting outside for fresh air, vitamin D and exercise can really ‘ be an instant mood booster! ” Roup adds that it is always the right time to get into a fitness routine, but spring allows those of us who do not live in hot weather to get outside more and incorporate exercise more frequently.

Bootcamp and obstacle style workouts

Jonhenry also thinks we will see more people participating in boat camps (and fitness challenges, such as a 90-day fire challenge), beach workouts and obstacle courses. “They allow you to have a change from your usual environment and the opportunity to connect with others,” he says. “On top of that, it allows you to do unconventional training sessions instead of being locked up indoors. In general, exercising outdoors during the spring keeps it really fresh and fun, and allows you to challenge yourself by changing your exercise routine. ”
