Levitin is said to have developed symptoms of cough in late March 2020. The family believes he contracted COVID at one of his regular Starbucks outlets.
Shortly after, Levitin developed shortness of breath. Oximeters showed their blood oxygen levels were very low, only 85.
On March 28, 2020, Albert took her to Weill Cornell, one of the dedicated COVID hospitals in his area. Hundreds of patients were also being examined in the hospital.
Levitin was lying in a coma, family members gathered outside the hospital and prayed for him.
Levitin battled stroke, bladder cancer, heart attacks, auto-immune diseases, and a paralyzed diaphragm in the years before falling ill. They knew how unlikely he was to wake up.
Then one day in August 2020, five months after being admitted to the hospital, he woke up from a coma.
Although his condition improved, his lungs were not strong enough to breathe on his own so he still had to use an assistive device.
In late 2020, Levitin was transferred to New Jersey for treatment. After receiving treatment in an isolated facility, he was transferred to Palisades Medical Center in April 2021.
His struggle against COVID-19 continued till mid-July this year, where he was declared brought dead. On 23 July last, his fight against Corona had to stop.
Levitin died of a heart attack while on a ventilator for COVID-19 treatment at Palisades Medical Center.
“Two years on the ventilator is very rare. This could be a record,” Dr. E. Wesley Alley, critical care physician who treats COVID-19 patients at Vanderbilt University Medical Center but is not involved in Levitin’s care.
