Following President Andres Manuel López Obrador’s decision this week to turn his government’s top tasks into national security tasks, the issue of the Tulum airport, one of the current administration’s favorite projects, was rekindled.
In this regard, the Secretary of National Defense (Cedena) presented progress in the construction of the new Tulum airport, which will help to become an option to improve passenger transportation in the Yucatan Peninsula with the inclusion of the Mayan train in the region.
According to President López Obrador, the Tulum airport will begin operations by December of this year, with the capacity to serve approximately 5.5 million passengers annually, 75% of whom will be of foreign origin. With the first phase which will have 32 thousand annual air operations.
The complex is built over an area of 1,500 hectares, with a 3,700-metre-long runway, with a class one instrument landing system and hi-tech navigation aids.

According to the National Security Law published on January 31, 2005, for a project or work to be considered as national security, it must comply with certain points:
I. Security of the Mexican nation against threats and risks facing Mexico.
Second. Protection of national sovereignty, independence and defence.
Third. Maintenance of constitutional order and strengthening of democratic institutions of government.
IV. The legitimate defense of the Mexican state in relation to other states.
V. Preservation of democracy on the basis of economic, social and political development of the country and its people.
