Thompson no-hitter moves to sixth place as Pirates beat Reds 3-1

PITTSBURGH ( Associated Press) — Zack Thompson took a no-hitter in the sixth inning and Daniel Vogelbach to guide the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night.

Brandon Drury broke the no-hit bid by lining up a clean single to the right field with two outs.

It was the only hit by Thompson (2–3) in six innings. He made three walks and three strikeouts, throwing 76 pitches and combining on a four-hitter with Will Crowe, Chris Stratton and David Bedner, ending the Reds’ three-game winning streak.

Thompson entered six games with an ERA of 7.08, including five starts, but ran his scoreless innings to 12. Last Sunday, he played five shutout innings in Cincinnati but didn’t make a decision.

Bednar retired while saving the last four batsmen on the same number of occasions.

Vogelbach’s 433-foot leadoff home run to center made it 3-0 in the fourth. It was Vogelbach’s team-leading sixth homer and the only extra-base hit of the game.

Rodolfo Castro had two of the Pirates’ five hits.

Luis Castillo (0–1) lost in his second start of the year, giving away three runs and four hits in five innings. He missed all of spring training and the first month of the regular season with a strained shoulder.

Pirates opened the scoring by scoring two runs in the second innings. Jack Suwinsky on a balk and Diego Castillo on an RBI single.

The Reds’ lone run came on a single from Albert Almora Jr. in the seventh. Trailing 3–1, Cincinnati placed runners on second and third base, but Crowe ended the innings by dismissing Matt Reynolds.
