Thousands stranded at airports due to cancellations- Southwest, more than 2 thousand

After exiting the taxi, Angelica Martinez and her family went to the Southwest Airline counter, but to their surprise, they were told the flight was canceled… and they might be given another seat after 5 days.

“Yeah, well, very disappointed because we came over and they told us they sold out more of the plane tickets and the seats they had. We already had tickets before we got here and they’re not going to give us our seats.” Well, it’s not fair.” , it’s not fair,” Martinez said.

Thousands of people like him are stranded at US airports.

According to the Flightaware page, more than 4,600 flights were canceled and more than 11,000 were delayed on Tuesday. A large portion of these cancellations and delays are attributed to Southwest Airlines with 2,544 canceled flights.

“We came for five days for the holiday and now we are delayed, this is not even a delay, this is 6 days cancellation, we have to wait till Jan 2nd, total disaster. Right now we are going to see that Are there hotels, a lot of people are overbooked and hotels in New York are not cheap,” said Fabiola Ramón, another impressed traveler.

Other major airlines, including American, Delta and JetBlue, had cancellation rates ranging from zero to 2%. However, according to FlightAware, Southwest cancellations this Tuesday at LaGuardia Airport were 83%.

For its part, an airline spokeswoman said cancellations increased as winter storms moved across the country, leaving flight crews and aircraft stranded to protect passengers and crew. They have also indicated that they will reimburse the expenses to the passengers and have apologised. However, it is a matter of little relief for those affected.

Jim Martinez and his family decide to rent a car and drive thousands of miles so they don’t lose their jobs.

“I didn’t want to drive because I came on vacation, now I need to go 2,000 miles back to Texas, it’s three days of traffic and more expense,” Martinez said.

The Department of Transportation said on Twitter that they were concerned about the airline’s unacceptable rate of cancellations and delays and that they would be investigating Southwest regarding the cancellations and lack of customer service.
