Three men and two women killed in shooting at US gay club

Washington, Nov 21: Three men and two women were among the five people killed and more than 25 injured in a shooting at an LGBT club in the US this Saturday, local officials said Monday.

The 22-year-old suspect, identified as Anderson Lee Aldrich, remains in hospital but is expected to be released in the next few days. He will appear in the court virtually as soon as he is discharged.

The media announced today that he would be charged with five counts of first-degree murder and five other hate crimes, although El Paso County (Colorado) District Attorney Michael Allen told a press conference that this has not been formalized. Still fully charged.

The shooting took place at midnight on a Saturday at an adult venue called Club Q, which hosts a drag queen performance.

Colorado Springs police spokeswoman Pamela Castro said the room was a “refuge” for the area’s gay community and noted that an investigation is underway to see if she had received threats in the past.

The assailant began firing at people as he entered and was subdued by at least two of those present, one of whom was wounded.

Police received an alert call at around 11:56 pm local time (06:56 GMT) on Saturday and a few minutes later several patrols went to the scene, where they arrested the attacker.

The injured were taken to various hospitals in private vehicles and at least 13 were admitted on Monday as well.

The Hill outlet noted that Aldrich is the grandson of politician Randy Voepel, a legislator in California’s lower house who compared the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol to the War of Independence.
