Music icon Tina Turner has died “peacefully” at her home in Switzerland after battling a “prolonged illness”.
Her spokesperson said in a statement: “Tina Turner, the Queen of ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ died today at the age of 83 after a long illness at her home in Kusnacht, near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world has lost a musical legend and icon.”
Turner – whose hits include “Proud Mary” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It” – has battled a number of health problems in recent years, including cancer, kidney failure and a stroke.
The award-winning star found major success in the 1960s, when she was performing with her then-husband Ike Turner. However, after the divorce in 1978, Turner achieved even greater solo success.
The singer, with a raspy and distinctive voice, went on to become one of the biggest pop and rock stars of the 80s and 90s.
Her hit films include ‘Let’s Stay Together’, ‘Steamy Windows’ and ‘Private Dancer’ as well as starring in the 1985 action film ‘Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome’.
Turner has won eight Grammy Awards throughout his career and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 as a solo artist.
It also influenced many current pop stars such as Beyoncé, Janet Jackson and Rihanna.
Turner began dating music executive Irwin Beck in the 1980s, and the couple married in 2013.
The couple lived together in Switzerland and Turner, born in Brownsville, Tennessee, obtained Swiss citizenship. Bach also donated one of his kidneys to her in 2017, when it was revealed that the music star was suffering from kidney failure.
