Titans fire GM John Robinson

Nashville, Tenn. ( Associated Press) – Tennessee Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk fired general manager John Robinson on Tuesday in the midst of her seventh 7-year season with the team. 5.

The Titans announced Strunk’s decision in a statement. Ryan Cowden, the team’s vice president of sports personnel, would take over from Robinson for the remainder of the season.

At the conclusion of the season the team would begin the search for a new general manager.

Strunk said her goal since March 2015, when she was controlling owner, was to raise the bar in all aspects of the franchise she inherited from her late father, Bud.

He added that the Titans have made “significant progress” on and off the field.

And in addition to investing millions of dollars in the team, Strunk will try to show that he doesn’t shy away from decisions in his quest for the Lombardi trophy that his father never managed to win.

Robinson was fired even though the team finished second, behind only the Kansas City Chiefs for most consecutive winning seasons.

“This progress includes the core of our business, the football team itself, which is regularly evaluated on both its results (wins and losses) as well as team and roster construction,” Strunk said. “I am proud of what we have achieved in my eight seasons as owners, but I believe there is much more to do and higher aspirations to achieve.”

Strunk paid to renovate the Titans’ headquarters, doubling its size to accommodate several new employees.

The Titans are about to lock down the last of the funding for a new indoor arena by the 2026 season.

Strunk fired coach Ken Whisenhunt in November 2015 after starting 1–6 in his second season and going 3–20 overall. He fired general manager Ruston Webster at the end of that season.

They hired Robinson, a native of Union City, West Tennessee, in January 2016 after the franchise posted a combined 5-27 record in 2014 and ’15.

In January 2018, when coach Mike Mularkey hesitated to make changes, Strunk fired him after a divisional round playoff loss. He quickly named Mike Vrubel as his replacement.

The Titans have never been worse than 9–7 under Robinson. They were the top seed in the AFC in 2021 with a 12-5 record.

This earned Vrabel, whom Robinson helped recruit, the Associated Press Coach of the Year award in January 2018.

The contracts of Robinson and Vrubel were only extended in February.
