To undock cargo ship from space station to horrific death over Pacific

A cargo spacecraft will descend from the International Space Station on Tuesday to re-enter Earth. However, it will not land, but will burn up in the atmosphere, ending its nearly decade-long service. Operated by Northrop Grumman, the robotic Cygnus freighter named SS Pierce will have a furious end over the Pacific Ocean.

The cargo will lift off from the flight laboratory at 6:05 a.m. EDT (3:35 a.m. IST) after being attached to the space station from February this year. The spacecraft has so far carried 50,802 kg of equipment and supplies to the astronaut crew aboard the ISS.

The spacecraft was named SS Piers Sellers in honor of the British-American climate scientist who launched three missions to the International Space Station. The cargo spacecraft lifted off into space on top of a Northrop Grumman Antares rocket from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island in Virginia.

“The experience gained by the Cygnus program is also being applied to other Northrop Grumman human space programs. Cygnus is the basis for the Habitation and Logistics Outpost, or HALO, the first module planned for NASA’s Lunar Gateway that will orbit the Moon and the lunar surface. and will enable future exploration beyond the Moon,” Steve Kerin, vice president, civil and commercial space, Strategic Space Systems, Northrop Grumman, said in a statement.

Before departure, the Cygnus spacecraft took a significant step forward and raised the orbit of the International Space Station (ISS). Cygnus fired its main onboard engines to adjust the station’s orbit to the desired altitude to support upcoming operations. The flight laboratory operates just 400 kilometers above the planet’s surface.

The reboost is the latest in a series of improvements Northrop Grumman has made to the spacecraft to meet customer needs since its first mission to the station in 2013. The company has increased the volume of cargo carried to the station with a larger cargo module.
