Today in Korean History

1946 – Student groups organize protests against communism, spreading across the northern part of the Korean peninsula, in Hamheung, a city in what is now North Korea. After Korea regained its sovereignty from Japan in 1945, it fought bitterly between capitalists and communists until the country was divided by the 1950-53 Korean War.

1956 – South Korea signs an agreement with Norway, Sweden, and Finland to build a medical center in Seoul. The agreement with South Korea also hints at the United States to buy agricultural products.

1976 – Choi Kyu-hah is sworn in as the country’s 12th prime minister.

1986 – Film director Shin Sang-ok and his actress wife Choi Eun-hee, who were kidnapped by North Korea in 1978, flee the North, taking refuge in the United States Embassy during a visit to Vienna, Austria.

1998 – Kim Dae-jung’s government announces a special amnesty for 5.5 million people to commemorate the overthrow of the government in February.

2004 – SK Telecom launches a digital communications satellite from the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA. The launch of the satellite, named Hanbyul and codenamed MBSat, ushered in the era of mobile satellite broadcasting in South Korea.

2008 – A special prosecutor clears Lee Jay-yong, the son of Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee, and dozens of top Samsung executives on suspicion that they illegally covered up large losses from the troubled Internet company run by an apparent heir. .

2011 – South Korea closes the largest oil field development in its history with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

2017 – Top presidential secretaries held their resignations, the day after former President Park Geun-hye left office following a corruption scandal.

2020 – South Korea announces a temporary ban on short-selling shares for six months, starting next Monday, amid a market meltdown caused by the new coronavirus outbreak.
