He explained that it was a national championship, “very interesting, and very demanding. Due to various conditions, some players could not travel, and the group was integrated with younger players who had a great tournament.

Villafana traveled to the national championship held in Zacatecas fronting a squad of 8 players, of whom only three were in the age limit, born in 2005, the other three born in 2006 and two 15-year-olds born in 2007.

Their litmus test was in the first match when they faced Nuevo León on 11 May, a team that some coaches and experts began to call the “Northern Selection”, due to the quality of their reinforcements, mainly players from Chihuahua.

Although the score favored Nuevo León 73 points to 50, the Tamaulipas team played a very good game, to the point that they got 17 points to 16 points in the second quarter and 18 points to 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Friday, May 12, was a great day for the Tamaulipas National Team, as they won the next two games of Group B. In the morning they beat Michoacán by 44 points to 42 in a heart-stopping match that had to be the defining overtime; And in the afternoon they struck a blow of authority against Aguascalientes, winning 40 points against 29.

As such, Tamaulipas advanced to the 8th stage of the finals, finishing second in their group and eighth in the general table.

Once again, Tamaulipas played brilliantly, and once again the tie had to be dramatically defined in the final seconds of the match, but now the result was unfavourable, with the Estado de México winning 62 points to 61 with a free kick score. . ,

Thus, the Tamaulipas national team bid goodbye to its aspirations of advancing to the national championships, but with the satisfaction that it has an excellent group of basketball players to work with in future competitions.
