Top 10 Candidates from the College Football Expansion Group of Five Conferences

With USC and UCLA expanding to the Big Ten, and the Pac-12 scrambling to explore what it has and other options as we speak, Who’s Available?

Of course, all talk is about whether or not Oregon and Washington are going to go, and if the Big 12 will try to steal the shows from somewhere, and if the ACC finally puts a ring on it with Notre Dame, or if the Big 12 will. Ten reaches there first.

What about schools that may not be big, huge, massive, but will fill a hole and help form the basis of a Pac-12 or Big 12 or maybe ACC?

None of these ten schools have the stuff to be considered for the Big Ten or the SEC, but they are still very attractive.

All these ten schools have something in common – people. Large enrollments, decent-to-hustle alumni base, good-to-be-great media market.

Here are the major categories…

Enrollment: At least 20,000. The school must be big – no SMU.
Alumni Base: Where are the national eyeballs? In the streaming world, this is a big deal.
Media Market: It matters more than anything else.
US news and world report Latest Ranking: How good is your school? It matters a lot more than you think.
AAU Members: Are you part of the Association of American Universities? This is a big deal for the Big Ten. To cut to the chase, there is none on this list.
Tier 1 Research: Are you an elite research school with everything that comes with it? This can be swamped a bit – Notre Dame isn’t, and Nebraska was, but isn’t now.
Stadium Size: Not a dealbreaker, but it’s nice to have a big house.

AAU Members: No
Tier 1 Research: Yes
Stadium Size: Lincoln Financial Sector, 69,676

Pros: Huge market with huge alumni base. solid school. A better recruiting area than you think.
Shortcoming: This is temple football. There have been moments like this, but this is a city school in a pro city.
Best Power Five Fit: acc
ground level: Don’t blow it like you just did. Remember, the media market the media market the media market. Penn State may have a hold on Philadelphia — for the most part — but for the ACC or Big 12, getting a top five media market makes up for all other concerns.

Pros: Huge enrollment and student base. This is the University of Nevada. Tier 1 research helps.
Shortcoming: Football facilities – stadiums – are not great. small market. This is not Las Vegas.
Best Power Five Fit: pac 12
ground level: This can work for the Big 12 as well. It’s not a needle-mover for the Pac-12, but it’s an easy geographic tie-in with Oregon State, Washington State, Utah, and anyone else in the Mountain West.

Pros: Great football history. solid hoops. Not a terrible media market.
Shortcoming: school size. Lack of national base.
Best Power Five Fit: pac 12
ground level: It’s an easy fit for football fans. Business-wise, it’s hard to be entirely without an eye, and with the region already partly taken over by the state of Washington and the state of Oregon.

8. UTSA

Shortcoming: Larger stadium, but could use a different look and feel to the college market. Academic Ranking.
Best Power Five Fit: big 12
ground level: It’s a big school that makes doing the nearly impossible and expanding its footprint somewhere in Texas. Easy tie-in with Texas Big 12 Schools.

7. Fresno State

Enrollment: 24,610
Alumni Base: 300,000
Media Market: 55
US news and world report Latest Ranking: 213
AAU Members: No
Tier 1 Research: No, Tier 2
Stadium Size: Bulldog Stadium, 40,727

Pros: A good California media market in the range of San Francisco and Sacramento. Big enrollment. great fan. Geographically fits among a whole range of options.
Shortcoming: Academic ranking is fine – not Tier 1 or AAU. Yes, it’s a good market, but it’s not that huge. It is more of a group school than a compulsory school.
Best Power Five Fit: pac 12
ground level: The Pac-12 needed to keep its branding as the convention of the West Coast, and that meant loading into California schools. Fresno State will bring the energy to football dates with Stanford and Cal—the notoriously hot and cold fan base.

6. Memphis

Enrollment: 22205
Alumni Base: 165,000
Media Market: 51
US news and world report Latest Ranking: 249
AAU Members: No
Tier 1 Research: Yes

Pros: decent media market. Tier 1 School. Hotbed area for football. good hoops.
Shortcoming: media is not a market He Great. Academic ranking is fine. Decent enrollment but not huge.
Best Power Five Fit: big 12
ground level: It should soon be an easy call for the Big 12. It fits right in with city football schools like AAC, like Cincinnati and Houston, and it’s within easy range of Oklahoma and Texas.

5. East Carolina

Enrollment: 28,962
Alumni Base: 190,916
Media Market: 102
US news and world report Latest Ranking: 213
AAU Members: No
Tier 1 Research: No, Tier 2
Stadium Size: Dowdy-Ficklan Stadium, 51,000

Pros: Interesting TV market that increases the non-ACC footprint. Nice stadium size and great fan base. Underrated recruitment base.
Shortcoming: Tier 2. The brand name is not at the national level. There is no real non-ACC geographic fit.
Best Power Five Fit: big 12
ground level: The ACC already has Duke, North Carolina, NC State, and Wake One, it doesn’t need to get any more North Carolina, but it won’t be a bad idea if the Big Ten figures out how to get UNC on its awesome Grant of rights out of media deal. However, the Big 12 will have to think like the Big Ten. Develop media market, new eyes, new footprint, brand. Do that, and the league extends from Provo to the Atlantic Ocean.

4. Colorado State

Enrollment: 28,580
Alumni Base: 240,000
Media Market: 16 (counts as part of the Denver market)
US news and world report Latest Ranking: 148
AAU Members: No
Tier 1 Research: Yes
Stadium Size: Canvas Stadium, 41,000

Pros: Denver markets relatively untapped by the Big Ten and Big 12. Good fan base. Fantastic new stadium. Academic Ranking OK. Level 1.
Shortcoming: Capped by the University of Colorado right down the street. Haven’t made a big football splash in a while.
Best Power Five Fit: big 12
ground level: How has this not happened yet? If Colorado is somehow snagged by the Big Ten, it’s an easy grab for the Pac-12, but the Big 12 should be an easy tie-in to the Denver market and to Kansas and the state of Kansas.

3. UNLV

Enrollment: 30,679
Alumni Base: 135,000
Media Market: 40
US news and world report Latest Ranking: 249
AAU Members: No
Tier 1 Research: Yes
Stadium Size: Elegant Stadium, 64,676

Pros: This is Vegas. There’s a reason the attackers wanted to set up shop there. Good media market. a lot of students. Great Stadium.
Shortcoming: UNLV football has been terrible. Academics are fine – even as a Tier 1 school.
Best Power Five Fit: pac 12
ground level: This needs to be done tomorrow. With the LA schools gone, Las Vegas has to be the home base of the Pac-12, and that means it needs UNLV as an easy host school to increase the snaz for a league that suddenly needs it. Is.

– 2022 CFN UNLV Preview

2. San Diego State

Enrollment: 36,334
Alumni Base: 300,000
Media Market: 27
US news and world report Latest Ranking: 148
AAU Members: No
Tier 1 Research: No, Tier 2
Stadium Size: Snapdragon Stadium, 35,000 (can go up to 55,000 as needed)

Pros: Great media market without an NFL team. Shiny new stadium. Red Hot School which has just received over 100,000 applications for 2022. Great football program. Great hoops. This is San Diego.
Shortcoming: Not AAU, and not Tier 1. Yes, there is a fan base, but it needs to rise up and rock. This is San Diego – there are other things to do.
Best Power Five Fit: pac 12
ground level: The Tier 2 designation is a killer, but the Pac-12 just can’t screw around. This is the Pac-12 – it should have a presence in Southern California. At the moment, the closest in-state school to LA is Stanford.

– 2022 CFN San Diego State Preview

1. USF

Enrollment: 50,000
Alumni Base: 290,000
Media Market: 13
US news and world report Latest Ranking: 103
AAU Members: No
Tier 1 Research: Yes
Stadium Size: Raymond James Stadium, 65,618

Pros: Tampa Media Market. Huge student body. Decent educational status. Outstanding recruitment base.
Shortcoming: The atmosphere is not there with an off-campus stadium. The football team has fallen. Commuter School Tags – Show fans need a winner.
Best Power Five Fit: big 12
ground level: It’s crazy that the Big 12 hasn’t cleaned it up. If you’re going to add UCF, you have to get USF – you have I-4 and you have Tampa and Orlando markets. Combine all this with the huge enrollment in the two schools, and … the ACC will have to give some thought to this as well.
