HOUSTON (WNN) — Trapper Panell raced for a 4-yard touchdown to make a comeback in the fourth quarter and FCS top-ranked Sam Houston defeated Stephen F. Austin 21-20.
The Bearcats, playing without starting quarterback Eric Schmid, received a 26-yard TD pass from Keegan Shoemaker to Ife Adeyi, then driving for a go-forward score in the middle of a small field after a lumberjack punt from the end zone. Benefitted.
Lumberjacks’ Chris Campos, who had previously scored a 49-yard field goal, had 40 seconds remaining with a 51-yard effort.
At the end of the third quarter, Stephen F. Austin got a high snap in a Sam Houston 9 and Trey Self passed Lawton Rickel to TD in the next game to take a 20-6 lead.
Shoemaker, a transfer from Louisiana-Lafayette where he was Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2019, was passing 29 of 16 for 222 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Himself was 17 of 34 for 215 yards with two touchdowns and a pick. Xavier Gipson made nine catches and one score for 100 yards.
Sam Houston (4-0, 2-0 ASUN-WAC Challenge) has 10 straight wins over the lumberjacks (3-2, 0-2). Due to the pandemic, the rivals did not play last year for the first time since 1945.
The 95th Battle of Pine Woods was played at NRG Stadium in Houston.
