Tormenting goal puts Paranaense in Libertadores semifinals

Buenos Aires ( Associated Press) — Athletico Paranaense beat Estudiants de la Plata 1-0 on Thursday with a Vitor Roque header in extra time to qualify for the Copa Libertadores semi-finals.

The team, led by veteran multi-champion Luiz Felipe Scolari, will next face defending two-time champion Palmeiras in the next instance. The other finalists will come from the Velez Sarsfield-Flamengo crossing.

Early in the match, the Brazilian club broke through a pair of quarter-final matches, both of which knew how to neutralize their qualities. He scored a goalless draw in the first leg.

When the scent of the penalty by definition began to fly over the Jorge Luis Hirschi Stadium in La Plata, Vitinho entered the field and started center looking for the head of an unmarked stop defeating goalkeeper Mariano Andozer.

In the first half with some emotion in the field, Pincha—the champion in 1968, 1969, 1970 and 2009—leaded the goal with a frontal free kick by Fernando Zucci in the 43rd minute, led by Paraguayan Jorge Morel. Goalkeeper Bento miraculously saved Paranance.

Agustin Rogel was close for the next corner kick, also with a header.

In 2021 the South American’s champion Parranens came out of his lair in the complement and was close in the 52nd minute with Tomas Neck’s right hand first.

In the serve of time, Mauro Méndez ruined a one-on-one with Bento that would have resulted in a local win.

Historic Melgary

With a memorable performance from his goalkeeper Carlos Caseda in a series of penalties, Peru’s Melgar defeated Internazionale de Porto Alegre away from home and will play the semi-finals of the South American Cup for the first time in its history.

A Peruvian team has once again finished in the top four of the competition after 19 years, with a 3-1 victory in the penalty shootout at the Beira Rio Stadium. The eventual champion in the 2003 edition was Cienciano, who was the champion at the time.

After being tied for no goals in the series for the quarter-finals, goalkeeper Cassada saved consecutive shots from Adenilson, Taisson and Carlos de Pea. Only Pedro Henrique scored for the local team.

Meanwhile, Kenji Cabrera, Bernardo Cuesta and Luis Iberico converted Melgar’s penalty. And Lionel Galliano was stopped by goalkeeper Daniel.

Melgar will face Independent del Valle of Ecuador in the semi-finals. For the second key, the Brazilians will play against Atlético Goiâniense So Paulo.
