Total energy to leave Myanmar over human rights abuses

French oil company TotalEnergies said on Friday it would withdraw from Myanmar over human rights abuses committed since the country’s military came to power in a February 2021 coup.

“The situation, in terms of human rights and more generally the rule of law, which has been deteriorating in Myanmar … has prompted us to re-evaluate the situation and no longer allow TotalEnergies to make a substantial positive contribution to the country.” is,” the company said.

Total will withdraw from its Yadana gas field in the Andaman Sea, which provides electricity to the local Burmese and Thai population, six months after the end of its contract period.

The company said it did not identify any means of stopping gas production and approving the military junta without paying the military-controlled Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE).

About 30% of the gas produced in Yadana is sold to MOGE for domestic use, which according to Total accounts for almost half of the electricity supply of the largest city, Yangon.

International diplomatic pressure and sanctions have been building against Myanmar’s military rule since last year’s overthrow of civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The European Union has imposed targeted sanctions on the Myanmar military, its leaders and entities, while Norwegian telecommunications operator Telenor sold its stake in the Burmese digital payments service in a coup this week.

According to a local watchdog group, more than 1,400 civilians have been killed in military crackdowns on dissent, and several anti-junta militias have emerged across the country.

Suu Kyi was convicted this month of three criminal charges and sentenced to four years in prison and now faces five new corruption charges.
