A new company in Canada runs a rail route in the United States south from April through October. Travelers do not sleep on the train, but in a hotel in the town of Glenwood Springs, Colorado before arriving in Moab. A day trip includes crossing the Continental Divide and riding along the Colorado River, past snow-capped peaks and red-throated cliffs while sipping on clear cocktails.

On this trip from Chicago to New Orleans, it’s easy to stop on the way, try something new, and catch the next 19-hour train ride. Stop in Memphis to see Graceland, the home of Elvis, and the National Civil Rights Museum, then stay overnight in the city. The train offers flexible dining and canteen services, but Amtrak is considering dining with staff later this year after transitioning to a more traditional one. Also on the track in 2023, passengers will be able to travel from New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama on another train through an iteration of the service.

Empire State Building, one of Amtrak’s most famous routes, which lasts 46 hours, is ideal for seeing some of the most iconic scenes in the West. After the daily westbound train leaves Chicago, you’ll cross the Mississippi River and follow the plains of North Dakota and parts of the Lewis and Clark Trail. Horse riding through Glacier National Park in Montana (you can stay overnight). From Spokane, Washington, you can continue to Seattle or head up the Columbia River Canyon to Portland, taking in the views of Mount Hood. Amtrak plans to roll out a second train later this year between Chicago and St. Paul, Minnesota, for more train flexibility.
