Travis Scott ‘Absolutely Devastated’ by death at Astroworld

Travis Scott issued a statement after at least eight people died and many were injured as a result of a crowd gathering during his performance at the Astroworld music festival in Houston.

“I am absolutely devastated by what happened last night,” wrote the rapper who opened the annual Astroworld festival in 2018 on social media. “I pray to families and all those affected by what happened at Astroworld.”

Scott thanked the early respondents and added that he is “determined to work with the Houston community to heal and support families in need.”

The incident started at the music festival around 9:00 pm on Friday.

“The crowd began to shrink towards the front of the stage, which caused some panic and caused some trauma,” Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said at a press conference. “People started to fall out, lose consciousness, and this created additional panic.”

More than 300 people were treated at a field hospital near the festival, and 23 people had to be transported to other hospitals in the area, including eight who have died, CNN reported.

“The crowd pressed me so hard that I felt like I couldn’t breathe,” said 22-year-old Emily Mungia. “I started screaming for help … I was as scared as if I was about to die.”

Sharp video posted on social media shows people in the audience who climb up the stage and shout that people need help while the show continues. Scott has stopped the show on several occasions to ask security to help fans, although he has been criticized on social media for not interfering anymore.

Houston Chronicle music critic Joey Guerra, who attended the festival, told the BBC that Scott stopped the performance “several times” to send security to help fans. Guerra said that, in his opinion, Scott “did not realize the scale of what was happening.”

According to The New York Times, Scott’s shows were full of chaos and trauma. He is currently being sued by a viewer who was paralyzed after being pushed off a balcony and dragged onto the stage in 2017, and Scott cited a recklessness charge after prompting Lollapalooza members to climb over barricades.
